This study evaluated the biocompatibility and preliminary hemostatic efficacy of FHS, a chitosan-based material developed in Vietnam. Assessments included in vitro cytotoxicity, hemolysis, acute systemic toxicity, and in vivo hemostatic performance in mice. Cytotoxicity was evaluated on L929 fibroblasts using the MTT assay after exposure to FHS extracts in DMEM; Axiostat extract served as a reference. Acute systemic toxicity was assessed in mice via intraperitoneal injection of FHS extract with 72-hour observation. Hemolytic activity was examined using rabbit blood, with PBS and distilled water as negative and positive controls; hemolysis was measured at 545 nm and erythrocyte morphology was observed by SEM. Hemostatic efficacy was evaluated using a mouse tail amputation model based on bleeding time and blood loss. Results showed FHS was non-cytotoxic (85.32–89.47% viability), caused no acute toxicity, and had low hemolysis (1.83%) with normal erythrocyte morphology. It reduced bleeding time (60.6%) and blood loss (65.3%). No significant differences were found compared to Axiostat. FHS shows good biocompatibility and potential for preclinical and clinical hemostatic applications.
